We specialize in home remodeling in San Diego with over two decades of experience taking pride in our high rate of customer satisfaction. Today I’m going to answer the question: Why does my house creak?

The creaking floor could be a couple of different things. It could be your floor joists, depending on what type of flooring you have (for example, wood flooring). It could be that the wood flooring isn’t adhered to the sub straight, which is the plywood below the floor – or concrete, depending on what your sub straight is.

Imagine you are walking on a second story – underneath your wood floors you’ve got plywood and then you’ve got your floor joists, it could be that the plywood isn’t nailed down to the joists, (the actual framing underneath the floor).

A lot of the newer homes have engineered joists. I was just in a house the other day where a client asked about a creak in their floor. We opened it up from underneath (so as not to disturb their flooring), and it turned out that the joist hangers needed to be attached to the joists. The framing crew that built the house didn’t connect the joists to the joist hangers.

On a wood floor, a lot of times you can do an easy fix like getting underneath the house and shim. First you can get a couple of wood shims from your local home improvement store, then simply throw a couple shims in the open gaps to take out the air between the wood, thus stopping the creak.

Please stay in touch with us on Facebook and Twitter. Thank you.

Green remodeling is the way that construction is leaning towards these days. People want to be more conscious of their impact to the earth. It’s energy efficient, it’s environmentally efficient, and it just makes for a lighter foot print on the earth. By lighter foot print, of course I mean, less of an impact, not only during the construction process but it lessens the impact in the overall life of the home on the planet too.
A lot of the green remodeling is also cost saving. It uses the earth for things such as, sun to light up a room instead of using electricity throughout the day, you could actually have opaque panels that deliver light throughout a room, giving you natural light in the room while warming the room naturally. That not only saves you money on both on heating and electrical, but saves the planets natural resources as well.

As a home remodeling business owner here in San Diego, I’ve come across many homes which have dealt with the problem of mold, and chances are you have too - and have you noticed that – even though you have cleaned it or thought you removed it, it tends to pop back up in the same place every time?

There are more than 100,000 different species of mold , and of those species, there are about 100 which are considered toxic. There are a lot mold testers out there called swab jockeys, who will come & test the mold with a swab – then charge $100 to go run a sample – only to tell you that you have mold and whether or not it’s toxic. The fact remains that the mold is still there and it needs to be removed.

There a lot of different myths on the internet; many people suggest using different things to spray on it. Some people think that bleach kills it. One way is to wipe the area with a sporiside or a specialty mold removal product that is designed specifically for that purpose – not just using some household bleach – because the problem with a lot of those sprays is that, they only last so long and mold can go dry. Unfortunately, what sometimes happens is that you may think you got rid of the mold, only to find out a couple of years later (after you start smelling that musty smell), that lo and behold, you’ve got mold right in the same spot that you had it before.

The best way is to remove the mold from the house completely. This means removing the wood or drywall entirely and then replacing it. This should be done by a licensed contractor or someone who specializes in this removal. Once that section is replaced, you shouldn’t have a problem again.
